Are brakes different on diesel trucks?

Yes — since diesel trucks are typically used to haul big loads, regular brakes, rotors, and calipers just don't provide enough stopping power.

When should I replace my brake pads?

Depending on your make and model, you'll notice some of the following when it's time to bring your truck in for brake service:

  1. Warning light comes on for low brake pads: This will be a dashboard indicator light that signals it’s time to replace your brake pads.
  2. The Squeal: There's a piece of metal built into your brake pads that, when the pads are worn down enough, starts rubbing against the rotor when you brake. It's super annoying (on purpose) so that you'll be forced to bring in your truck for service.
  3. Grinding noise: If you hear grinding, you've waited too long. Your pads are gone and are now rubbing against the rotor. Bring it in for service right away or you could be at risk of an accident.
  4. Your brake pads actually look think: If you can get in behind your tire to take a look, you can see if there's barely any pad left.

I think I have a brake problem. Can I drive to the shop?

No — dude. Obviously not. If your brakes are not operating properly, bite the bullet and get a tow. It's not worth putting your life and others live's at risk.

That said, if your brakes are just getting routine maintenance, by all means drive to the shop. If the squealer is going, it should be safe to drive. Just make sure you take care of it sooner rather than later.

ProMaster has got to be the most redundant vehicle name ever. That said, our mechanics are diesel brake promasters.

How many KMs are diesel truck brake pads good for?

Obviously it's going to depend on how your drive but diesel truck brake pads typically last between 40,000km and 100,000km.

Customer Reviews

"Longhorn Diesel was suggested to me by another service provider that didn’t have the equipment needed to perform the repairs my 3500 Dodge needed. First let me say they kept me informed, were fair on price and got my vehicle back to me in a timely manner. They were professional and had my truck back to me in pristine condition while finding other issues that were not identified. They also sent me video of the issue showing me the required work done and new issue identified."

After about 10 shops telling me no or giving me an unrealistic price. I came across Longhorn Diesel. I called Denmar and he was very down to earth and you can tell by how he talks that he isn’t your typical diesel mechanic. He genuinely took the time to get my truck right as well as him and I having a great conversation sharing what we both love to do. I would 110% recommend him to everybody I know of. Down to earth guy. Great business. Fair pricing. All around great business and I will be back.
